Rejecting the traditional potter’s wheel, Song uses an industrial extruder, a machine typically employed in brickmaking, to form long sections of clay, which she cuts, folds, and twists by hand. These sculptural gestures merge the sensibilities of ceramics and architecture, revealing the unpredictable beauty born from material, fire, and chance. The resulting works—curved, bent, and rippled—evoke calligraphic strokes, ancient inscriptions, and the remnants of lost civilizations. They are both fragile and monumental, temporal and continuous, creating a temporal and spatial field where vanished time and emerging waves converge. Song Jihyun was born in Daejeon, South Korea in 1993. After graduating from the Department of Ceramics at Dankook University in 2016, she continued her studies in the Ceramics and Glass program at the Royal College of Art in London from 2018 to 2021. In 2019, she participated in a residency at the SanBao Ceramic Art Institute in China, and in 2022 at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) in the Netherlands, where she expanded her practice through video and installation, exploring the fluid boundaries between media. Since 2023, she has been living and working in Korea, presenting solo exhibitions awarded by the Arts Council Korea (ARKO), the MNJ Cultural Welfare Foundation, and The Time of Art.
송지현은 전통적인 물레 대신 벽돌 제작에 쓰이는 산업용 진공압출기를 사용하여 흙을 성형하고, 손으로 자르고 접고 비틀며 조형을 완성한다. 이러한 과정은 도자와 건축의 감각을 결합시키며, 재료와 불, 우연이 빚어내는 예측할 수 없는 아름다움을 드러낸다. 완성된 작품들은 구부러지고 휘어진 형태로, 서예의 획이나 고대 문자의 잔재, 사라진 문명의 흔적을 연상시킨다. 그 형태는 연약하면서도 장중하고, 순간적이면서도 지속적이다. 송지현의 조각들은 과거를 품은 동시에 새로운 가능성을 내포하며, 사라진 시간과 다가올 파동이 교차하는 시공의 장을 만들어낸다. 작가는 1993년 대전에서 출생하였다. 2016년 단국대 도예과를 졸업한 후, 2018-21년 영국의 Royal College of Art의 Ceramics and Glass 과정에서 수학했다. 2019년에는 중국 SanBao Ceramic Art Institute, 22년에는 네덜란드의 European Ceramic Work Centre 등 레지던시에서 활동하며 영상과 설치 작업을 병행, 매체의 확장을 시도했다. 2023년부터 한국에서 거주하며 작업 중이며, 한국문화예술위원회(아르코), MNJ 문화복지재단 그리고 예술의 시간 등에서 선정되어 개인전을 개최하였다.
