The word Intersect means both cutting across and continuance. When two streets intersect, one is cut through by the other, hence from then on, they are both linked to other streets as well. Referring to the cross-overs inherent in intersections, the show contains work deeply related to Greg Colson's personal history. Six Intersections: Schools are composed of street signs indicating the locations of all the schools he has attended, from primary school to university. It constructs the image of various streets crisscrossing one another in his private reminiscence. The physical interweaving of the signs in space reflects the interconnectivity of the experiences as well as the mutability of life's facts and one's memory of them. What it might also show are intersections of intentions and accidents; in retrospect, things happened irrelevant to what one had desired or intended.

As the word Intersect is composed of two colliding meanings, Greg Colson's work is often completed by various conflicting gestures. He attempts to "allow the rational systems he depicts to be disrupted and contradicted by the material and physical contexts they are placed in." Whether his conflicting gestures question the contradictions in our society or express the paradox inherent in our lives, he seems to propose a contemplation. Colson often uses standardized systems (maps, charts, floor plans, etc.) and seemingly comments on the intrinsic contradiction that lies in the rational foundation of our society. But this is neither cynicism nor criticism. It rather leads to a unique viewpoint of his own, a playful stare. Each artist possesses or creates his or her unique contradiction. When Colson reacts to the world's inherent paradox with his contradictory gestures, a certain equilibrium seems to be reached. This might be the reason why his work feels like a contemplation rather than an argument.

Greg Colson's art has its roots in American Pop Art and his personal characteristics developed from being an introvert and an intellectual. Whereas Pop Art on the East Coast led by Andy Warhol to Jeff Koons is often loud, slick, and dramatic, Pop Art developed by Ed Ruscha to Greg Colson on the West Coast is based on coolness and certain dryness. Colson's work, in particular, is unpretentious, undramatic, understated, and subtly humorous. These traits can be seen as the sensibility of an important group of Americans who are often not considered to be Americans, let's say, the readers of the NY Times and L.A. Times. It is such a pleasure to witness a rare occasion where the overlooked American sensibility meets what is already American. When these two sensibilities intersect, when one is cut through by the other and is lead to unexpected possibilities, we want to keep looking at it with a smile on our faces.
